"Socialising with alcohol is fun and we should not pretend otherwise. We also shouldn’t fool ourselves into thinking that young adults won’t eventually discover this and want to do it themselves. There is a reason why a taste for alcohol is not specific to a single demographic in society; why it is not something we ‘grow out of’ and why, no matter how many times the NHS warns of it detrimental effects, we won’t stop drinking the stuff. That’s because chatting with friends over a pint or a bottle of wine is an enjoyable cultural tradition: the fuel of conversation, intimacy and the exchange of ideas."

Suzy Dean.

And…

“We should be encouraging young adults to drink sensibly, but to do this we need to be honest. We do regularly drink more than the government’s daily recommendation of two pints or glasses of wine and there’s nothing wrong with that. There’s also nothing wrong with a drink to unwind, relax and forget about our stressful day at work. More people need to stand up and say this in order to combat the moralising of anti-alcohol campaigners. We need to integrate young people into our drinking culture earlier, making sure that they learn how to drink rather than forcing them to first encounter alcohol in hiding on a park bench.”

It always seemed like the kids who went most crazy and ended up vomitting all night in college (repeatedly, god knows most of us had our bad night) were the ones who had never been exposed to alcohol growing up. I feel like it’s all about a healthy view of alcohol and making it something that is to be enjoyed responsibly and in moderation, not something that is taboo. Making something taboo only makes kids want it more…for that matter the same could be said about sex.

Free & Cheap Music

I know I don’t update this blog much anymore, but my employer recently decided that tumblr is something that should be blocked…

Anyway, I’m working from home today, so I thought I would share some good music deals I noticed yesterday. Amazon has 2 albums in their $5 section that I think are well worth 5 bucks:

Wolf Parade - Expo ‘86

Menomena - Mines

Also, if you are into that sort of thing, Girl Talk’s new album All Day is free. I recommend you turn it up to 11 and go running.

The Avalanches - “Frontier Psychiatrist” (2001)

Possibly the greatest video of all time.

The turtle man has haunted me for years.

I had no idea that there was a video for this song. Merlin Mann has made my day for pointing it out. Of course, this has also led to the discovery of the official Avalanches YouTube channel so there goes the rest of the evening.

Obamacare can’t get here fast enough

I filed a claim for a flu shot recently. I just got a letter from United Healthcare asking for proof of prior coverage. They are looking for a pre-existing condition for a flu shot. I wish I could say this is the only stupid thing UHC has done.

The cat took way too long but it looked damn good lit up. Sadly the pictures were not so great.

Why Monsanto is paying farmers to spray its rivals’ herbicides

Oh Monsanto, your evil seems to have no bounds. Apparently, now they are paying farmers to spray extra herbicides on their round-up ready crops since weeds are becoming round-up resistant. Did you wash your vegetables before dinner?

the BELG-INDIAN beer dinner

Finally someone in Austin is doing a veg-friendly beer dinner! Sadly, due to el bebe and home repairs I can’t possibly justify $50 for a dinner. Oh well, hopefully this is only the first of many beer dinners with non-meat options.
