Comics on Crack

When I was a kid, my favorite part of Sunday morning was getting to take the comics out of the Sunday paper and read through them.  Like any kid I skipped the Mary Worth and other old school comics that just seemed weird to me, but otherwise I read all of them.  I have to imagine that half of it or more didn’t make sense to me, but I loved it.

These days, I don’t get a Sunday paper and most of the comics that I would want to read in the paper I can find online anyway.  So now I go directly the source.  The real revelation though, is all of the amazing web comics out there these days.  Today, I wanted to share 2 videos of web comics doing their thing and creating a strip.  It is a truly amazing thing to watch in my opinion anyway.  They are both time compressed so you can watch the whole process in just a few minutes.

The first video is of Meredith Gran drawing her comic Octopus Pie.  The music is Atlas by Battles which just adds to insanity.  This one was created a while back, but it was the first video of this type I had seen and I just remember being blown away by the process.

The next video is of David Malki! (his exclamation point, not mine) drawing his comic Wondermark.  He just put this out a few days ago and I have to say I had no idea the amount of work that went into his comics.  His comics are all created from existing old sources and then mashed together, but that completely underscores the amazing things he does to put together his comic.  Just watch the video and you will see what I mean.

These are just 2 of the comics I keep up with, but more and more I am seeing artists post video or live streams of their drawing.  I know Mike from Penny Arcade and Scott Kurtz from PVPOnline will put up a UStream or other live stream from time to time.  So keep your eyes out, the creative process is always interesting.
